ABEG! Don’t stay at the front desk forever. Get an upgrade with BU

    Mimi needs a change.

She’s been working at one of Nigeria’s oldest government departments, for the past 5 years as an assistant for a Public Health officer. The place is okay, though, and her workmates are all friendly. When she started the job, she thought the salary was OK too.

    Not anymore.

Her life has changed over the last 5 years. Getting married and having 2 children in quick succession contributed a lot to the rapid change. She and her husband, CJ, both work really hard, and do their best to manage their income. But with the arrival of baby number 2 last year, their carefully managed finances have been stretched to breaking point. If they continue like this, in the next few years the family expenditure would have swallowed up their combined income totally.

She needs a better salary. A bigger challenge.

She wants a better life for herself, her family and her children. She’s not content to sit and watch CJ struggle alone to bring in more money for the family. How can she bridge the gap?

Moreover, Mimi knows almost everything there is to know about public health so much that her boss often leaves her in charge of all the office work when she goes on one of her frequent work trips. She is practically working as health officer herself, just unofficially, of course.

Mimi knows however, that with a mere secretarial certificate she can never be upgraded to health officer unless she improves her qualifications.

So now she starts to research institutions that can offer what she needs for an upgrade. Mimi stumbles across an article talking about an African university called Botho University that offers a program tailor-made for aspiring Health Officers.

Could this really be that easy? She does more research on the university’s website.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Health Information Management is targeted at those wishing to work in middle to senior management grades in clinical and hospital settings or physicians’ offices as Health Data & Information Managers, Bio Statisticians, Medical Informaticians, Data Quality Managers, Researchers, and Public Health Information Managers/ Officers…she reads.

But now, she wonders if she can qualify since she has a certificate in something totally off-field?

She continues reading up on the program…Applicants are expected to have successfully completed secondary schooling. The typical entry requirement is BGCSE or IGCSE (in Botswana), LGCSE (in Lesotho) or other equivalent secondary school qualification. BGCSE or IGCSE (in Botswana), LGCSE (in Lesotho) candidates are required to achieve a minimum grade of ‘D’ in five subjects.

    This is perfect!

Best of all, she can study via distance learning right here in Nigeria without having to worry about interfering with her current job!

With this qualification, Mimi can even leave the government office and find a job with an international NGO! Imagine how much that can do for her family.

    Are you like Mimi?

Do you need the flexibility to learn while you continue with your day job and family responsibilities?
