As part of our community engagement and social responsibility, Botho University supports Khasapane High School, Mafeteng, with sanitary towels. Botho University Dean, Dr Abhishek Ranjan said this support is part of the university’s community engagement. He said the support is not only to Khasapane High school but includes other schools in other districts. He said the university is committed in the long run to continue with the sanitary support for girls alongside the Hlokomela Banana project.

This gift is in partnership with Blue Ribbon, Lesotho. During the handover, the representative of the company Mr Seribane Mpeake said ‘’today we welcome Botho University to the family of Hlokomela Banana and we are grateful for the support and we look forward to a long lasting partnership with the university.”

The event was graced by the presence of the Patron of the Hlokomela Banana project, Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Bereng Seeiso who officially received the gifts of three packs each of sanitary towels to all the 125 school girls. Her Majesty urged the girls to focus on their schooling. She said that she was proud of the girls and that they should be proud of themselves. The Queen also pleaded with the boys to support the girls when nature calls and be responsible men for the betterment of women in the future. She also said the Hlokomela Banana Initiative was borne when she realized that girls were unable to attend school at least for a week because of the lack of sanitary towels.

On the other hand the District Education Manager, Mrs Manthabeleng Lenake encouraged the learners not to be distracted by anything, and to attend school and complete their secondary education successfully.

The Principal of the school, Mr Lethusang Koenane provided a profile of the student population. The school has 225 students( 125 girls, and 97 boys.) Mr. Koenane echoed the sentiments of the district education manager. He also said, ‘’This school is remote and we hardly host dignitaries like the ones we have today including Her Majesty the Queen, We are very happy as a school and indeed for our students. The reality of the matter is that some of the girls don’t come to school during their periods for a whole week and some have to use other unsanitary means to control the situation which is unhygienic.”  The principal concluded by thanking Hlokomela Banana and Botho University for the support of the gift of sanitary towels because it goes a long way in keeping the girl child at school.

At the close of the event, the university provided nourishments to all 225 students of the school.
